Michael’s hard work in the Kitchen pays off – National Careers Week

Michael Worth, VTCT learner at Eastleigh College was the winner of the Governors’ Award for Exceptional Progression in 2019. This is an award presented to a student who has given an outstanding performance through the year, showing commitment and dedication regardless of what life throws at them. It’s an award that highlights individuals whose achievements make them an exceptional role model and brand ambassador for the College.

Michael is an excellent example of the phrase “hard work pays off” overcoming many different challenges throughout his studies. Sue Lyons, Curriculum Manager for Hospitality & Catering, Event Management and Travel & Tourism, said: “Michael came to us from the care system, so had very little support given to him before college and throughout. From the very beginning he was enthusiastic and passionate about the course and had high aspirations of success; where ever possible he volunteered for extra duties such as open events, helping out with Junior Chef and also a number of competitions.”

During his time at Eastleigh College, Michael competed both locally and nationally winning several competitions including:

  • Finalist – The Seafood National Competition
  • Finalist – Young Restaurant Team of the year 2018
  • Medal winner – Hotel Olympia, Wessex and Hospitality Show

Michael was offered a part-time position during the summer between school years with the Chesil Rectory Restaurant in Winchester. He was going to return to study, however, the Restaurant offered him a full-time position as a Commis Chef which he has happily accepted and where he is now a permanent part of the team.

Michael was inspired by watching TV cookery shows and dreamt of being a chef in a high-end restaurant. Now, he is realising his dream and starting what promises to be a successful culinary career.

“After watching TV chefs and seeing the care and attention they took to every plate of food, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. Eastleigh was recommended to me, and after researching the catering area and seeing the extra things they got involved with, I just wanted to be a part of it.”

“I started on a Level 1 course before moving on to a Level 2 qualification. There were so many extra opportunities including guest chef nights, a ‘student takeover’ and industry week to name but a few.”

“And the college gave me great support. Coming from foster care and supporting myself while at college, they were always there to help and guide me through things like college fees and bursary applications.

“It’s great when you do something you’re really passionate about. I love working at The Chesil Rectory and want to continue to learn, develop and work my way up.”
